Myofunctional Therapy for Adults

Myofunctional therapy may be what you’ve been missing

It is never too late to improve your oral function. Many adults have spent years compensating for oral habits or muscle patterns that began in childhood. Over time, these compensations may contribute to concerns such as jaw tension, TMJ discomfort, clenching or grinding, mouth breathing, and poor sleep quality.

Adult myofunctional therapy helps retrain the tongue, lips, jaw, and facial muscles to work together more efficiently. At Peninsula Myofunctional Healthy & Wellness, we use a series of specialized exercises based on neuromuscular re-education, tactile stimulation, and behavior modification to improve muscle tone, coordination, symmetry and restore oral function.

Therapy focuses on building a healthy foundation for:

  • Proper resting tongue posture

  • Nasal breathing

  • A comfortable and consistent lip seal

  • Improved tongue mobility and coordination

  • A proper swallowing pattern

  • Balanced oral and facial muscle function

What to Expect at Peninsula Myo

Every patient begins with a comprehensive evaluation to assess oral function, breathing patterns, tongue mobility, muscle coordination, swallowing and individual concerns. Based on these findings, a customized treatment plan is created to support your specific needs and goals.

Treatment may include:

  • Individualized oral and facial exercises

  • Tongue mobility and stretching techniques

  • Breathing and oral rest posture training

  • Swallowing and muscle coordination exercises

  • Guidance for home practice between appointments

  • Pre and postoperative support when a tongue- tie or oral restriction is being evaluated or released

  • Referrals to dentist, orthodontists, ENTs, physical therapist or other healthcare professionals when additional evaluation may be beneficial

Myofunctional therapy is a collaborative process, Consistent home practice and regular appointments are important for developing new muscle patterns and creating lasting functional changes.

At Peninsula Myo, our goal is to help you better understand your oral function, address contributing patterns, and build healthier habits that support breathing, sleep, comfort, and overall wellness.
